PROFILE    Born Vitebsk (Rus) 1887 died Saint-Paul -de-Vence(Fr.)1985 This long career was marked by endless political and social upheaval,  which meant that he lived a number of different lives as a permanent exile from his homeland. As an artist he had a remarkable knock of being in the right place at the right time:  in Montparnasse in Paris before World War II, in Berlin with the Expressionists; in the heart of the revolutionary avant-garden in Russia; in New York with Stravinsky and Massine ; and in Province at the same time as Matisse and Picasso. His output was stupendous, ranging from the moving portraits of his first wife, Bella Rosenfeld, to the vibrant stained glass he produced for the cathedrals of Metz, Rheims and the synagogue of the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem - works that glorify color. Technically he was always seeking to experiment, and yet his inner vision and individualism remained constant throughout the years. This compilation of Chagall's greatest canvases draws examples of his diverse work from each of the decades between 1909 and 1980.It includes a lengthy introduction, and the text accompanying the pictures provides concise and illuminating commentary on the specific of Chagall's unique style.
